Skipton Festival of Walks 2017
As regular readers of our blog will know, here at the Rendezvous we’re incredibly keen on getting about in the beautiful countryside which surrounds Skipton. With this in mind, we’re delighted to give you details of Skipton’s Festival of Walks which is set to take place on Sunday 21st May 2017.
Organised by the Rotary Club of Skipton, a series of six very different walks, each designed to appeal to different ages and abilities, will take place in and around Skipton. The idea behind the event is that different charities and groups recruit walkers who then gather sponsors to raise funds for the charity or group of their choice. All the walks are for fun and by taking part, charities and groups have the opportunity to help fund work in their local community.
The Festival of Walks programme is as follows:
- Ghosts and Legends: this is a one hour tour of Skipton and will be led by a local historian and raconteur.
- Skipton Millennium Walk: this fully guided walk will take between 1 and 1.5 hours, following the brass plaques in Skipton and a great opportunity to learn more about the fascinating history of the town.
- Explore Old Skipton: guided by members of Skipton Civic Society, this walk is designed to offer walkers a chance to discover more on the ‘Gateway to the Dales.’ Walking time will be between 1 – 1.5 hours.
- Skipton Woods & Timeline Trail: this 1.5 hour walk will appeal to all ages. Guides from the Woodland Trust will be on hand to explain about Skipton’s ancient woodland, whilst leading the geo-caching/timeline trail for the more adventurous walkers.
- The Top Ten: this demanding 10 mile walk is intended for serious, experienced walkers and will be guided by experienced local ramblers over open countryside.
- Flasby with Sharphaw: this walk will take between 2 – 3 hours and will be guided by experienced walkers from U3A.
Walks 1 to 4 will start outside Skipton Town Hall, whilst walks 5 and 6 will commence from Skipton Auction Mart. Free car parking will be available for walkers at the Auction mart and discounted parking facilities for walkers in the town will be available at Skipton Building Society on The Bailey.
Walks 2 and 3 are suitable for the less active; however a responsible carer must accompany entrants. Unfortunately wheelchair and mobility entries for all walks are not feasible. Entrants may choose their preferred start time for all the walks (subject to availability) with the exception of walk 5. First aiders will be available throughout the day and will be based at Skipton Auction Mart. Unfortunately dogs are not permitted on walks 5 and 6 – dogs on all other walks must be on a lead.
Walkers can use each route to raise sponsorship for their own charity or group. However, if you would prefer to fund raise with the help of family, friends and colleagues, this can be done via Virgin Money Giving – all funds donated in this way will be shared equally between the Pioneer Project, SELFA and Medical Detection Dogs. Details of the Virgin Money Giving account can be found here.

Here at the Rendezvous Hotel we’re incredibly proud of our fantastic location on the outskirts of the pretty market town of Skipton and within easy reach of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park. There’s so much to do in this part of the world it’s hard to know where to start so we thought we’d give you a few ideas of things to do on a long weekend in Skipton and the Dales.
Exploring the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park
There’s no doubt that the Yorkshire Dales is best known for its stunning scenery. The landscape in this part of the world has something for everyone and whether you like nothing better than strolling through lush green farmland criss-crossed by limestone walls or striding across wild open moorland, the Dales is certainly diverse. Walking is possibly the most popular activity amongst visitors to the Dales and with hundreds of miles of beautiful walking routes on offer, there’s something to suit all ages, abilities and levels of walking experience.
Cycling is also proving to be incredibly popular with visitors to the Dales – especially since the success of the Tour de France Grand Depart in 2014 – with waymarked cycling trails for mountain bikers and many hundreds of miles of challenging road cycling routes.
If history is more your thing you’ll find that the Dales offers a wealth of castles, stately homes and historical sights. Skipton itself boasts one of the most intact medieval castles in England whilst Bolton Abbey and Fountains Abbey can be easily reached by car or public transport.
