The Great Diabetes Scandal
Type 2 Diabetes is a modern day scourge. It may cause blindness and damage to the blood circulation, which can result in the amputation of limbs. People with diabetes have an increased risk of developing heart disease, Alzheimer’s Disease and many cancers. Over 3 million cases were diagnosed in England in 2012. If present trends are maintained as many as one in two people could be affected.
The big problem is that current medical recommendation is not working. Patients who follow this advice do not get better. The vast majority continue to deteriorate and may well become very seriously ill as many have found to their cost.
Many people have discovered for themselves that the disease can be controlled, possibly even cured, by consuming a diet which is high in healthy fats and has a low content of starchy foods. In other words they do exactly the opposite of the official advice.
In September, over 100 people attended a meeting at The Rendezvous to hear from several first class speakers what can be achieved. Dr David Unwin, who is a GP in Southport described his own work in recent years. He is getting great results by helping patients with Type 2 Diabetes to switch to a diet that is low in carbohydrates and high in fat (LCHF). His success can be measured by the fact that his practice has reduced the expenditure on drugs by about £40,000 per year. All have successfully controlled their blood sugars and lost about 9kg weight into the bargain. In other words, they have effectively been cured.
As a follow-up, a training programme has been organized here in Skipton at The Rendezvous. The course is being presented by Keith Rathbone, who has used his skills as a Design Engineer to work out how to control his own T2D by making changes to his personal diet. He is very enthusiastic about sharing this knowledge with others and is a Patron of the Public Health Collaboration. Keith is particularly keen to attract people who have recently been diagnosed with T2D and wish to avoid the use of drugs. He will explain the rationale which underpins the strategy and provide detailed guidance on how to make the appropriate changes to the diet. The training commenced on Monday 23rd January with an introductory session, and will be followed by one session per week for another six weeks (on Mondays).
The programme is supported by the Natural Low Carb Store, which was established by Hannah Sutter, to produce high quality food products with a low content of carbohydrates.
This is a pilot and the hope is that it will be the first of many.
Finally, The Rendezvous has launched a Dining Club which will be based on meals that are not only LCHF but very tasty and good to eat. See the poster blow.
