Yorkshire – home of world-class cycling?
Yorkshire bids to host 2019 cycling world championships
This evening a formal announcement will be made as to whether Yorkshire’s bid to host the 2019 UCI Road World Championships, one of the biggest cycling events in the world.
Here at the Rendezvous we’re waiting to see whether Yorkshire’s bid has been successful and as regular visitors to our blog will know, we’re huge fans of cycling. 2014 saw incredible scenes here in Yorkshire as the Tour de France Grand Depart travelled around the region and since that time Yorkshire folk have well and truly been bitten by the cycling bug!
Yorkshire’s bid is up against Italy, Colombia, Germany and Canada but although there’s no doubting the natural beauty and impressive cityscapes these countries have to offer, when it comes to stunning landscapes and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, this part of the world is pretty hard to beat.
Why cycle in Yorkshire?
We’re biased of course but since the success of the 2014 Grand Depart, Yorkshire has definitely become the UK’s spiritual home of cycling. Whether you like nothing better than enjoying a long distance cycle on Yorkshire’s roads, or prefer to get mucky on one of our outstanding mountain bike routes, Yorkshire offers a wealth of opportunities to get out on two wheels for experienced cyclists and novices alike.
Cycle friendly hotel accommodation
The Rendezvous is the ideal starting point for cycling in the Yorkshire Dales and with the route of the first stage of the 2014 Grand Depart right on our doorstep, along with some brilliant mountain biking routes, we’ve become incredibly popular with cyclists. We also aim to offer cycle-friendly accommodation; including cycle storage, drying room, map printing service, packed lunches and special menus on request.

October half-term fun in Skipton and the Yorkshire Dales
There’s so much to do in Skipton and the Yorkshire Dales this October half-term it’s difficult to know where to begin and whether you like nothing more than exploring the countryside or scaring yourself silly at a Halloween themed event, you’ll be spoilt for choice!
One of our top picks for October half-term is an action packed week of spooky events scheduled to take place in the beautiful Dales village of Kilnsey. Just a short drive or easy bus trip from Skipton, Kilnsey is one of the prettiest villages in the National Park and during half-term this October, Kilnsey will be home to a whole range of great activities, including pumpkin carving and Christmas decoration making.
A spooky Halloween trail will run through Freeholders Wood near Aysgarth during half-term and offers a great opportunity to be spooked and enjoy some Halloween fun in this beautiful area of Dales woodland – fantastic fun for the whole family!
Thornton Hall Farm Park is within easy reach of the Rendezvous and during half-term they’ll be running a series of Halloween by Day events, including scary mazes, pumpkin carving and face painting – perfect for younger members of the family.
These are just a few of the half-term events and activities scheduled to take place in and around Skipton and the Dales this October. Don’t forget that this gorgeous corner of Yorkshire is criss-crossed by some of the most beautiful walking routes in England and when combined with lovely villages and market towns, offers the perfect location for a well-deserved autumn break.

Skipton people crowned the most polite in the country!
Malcolm Weaving, owner of the Rendezvous Hotel, has been working hard to have Skipton recognised as the Top Town for Courtesy 2016 by the National Campaign for Courtesy in 2016. The hotel is being rewarded for Malcolm’s hard work by being able to host the Awards ceremony on Sunday 27th November.
This fantastic award follows vetting of the town by the National Campaign for Courtesy and will be presented at an official event attended by officials and patrons of the campaign.
This fantastic accolade follows Skipton being named as High Street of the Year in 2009 and last year it was voted in the Sunday Times the best place to live.
The Campaign for Courtesy charity was launched in 1986, and is committed to promoting good manners, respect for self and others, courtesy for all and rejection of anti-social behaviour.
The special trophy will be held for 12 months at Skipton Town Hall, a framed certificate will mark the award and 600 businesses will receive a top courtesy town window sticker.
Mr Weaving said putting Skipton up for the award was easy because he had seen how politely both residents and people in the hospitality industry behaved.
“Skipton has such a multitude of attractions alongside the courtesy naturally shown to our visitors by the people and workers of Skipton – it was a no brainer!
“When I put Skipton forward no other town had a chance. Let’s keep it up residents and employees in Skipton as I think we are on a roll,” he said.
Robert Zarywacz, the charity’s vice chairman, said: “This year Skipton impressed our judges on their visit and now follows in the footsteps of previous titleholders Ilfracombe, Shrewsbury and Epsom.
“While a good quality physical environment is important, most people want to live in a friendly community. Modern lifestyles can create a lot of stress and courtesy helps us all to treat each other with respect. Congratulations to Skipton on a thoroughly deserved win!”

Skipton is crowned Top Town for courtesy
We’re absolutely delighted to hear that Skipton has been named as the National Campaign for Courtesy’s Top Town 2016!
Of course we know just what a great place Skipton is to live but it’s still great to see the lovely people of Skipton receive such a fantastic accolade. The National Campaign for Courtesy has been running their Top Town Award since 2012 and Skipton is the latest in a line of super-courteous towns across the UK to win the award, including Ilfracombe, Shrewsbury and Epsom.
We don’t have any details yet of when or where the award ceremony will take place so we’ll be sure to give you an update once we have further information. One things for sure though – it’s certain to be Skipton’s reputation for good old-fashioned Yorkshire hospitality that’s helped the town reach the top spot in the Top Town award.
Skipton is a wonderful place to visit and thanks to its fantastic location on the doorstep of the gorgeous Yorkshire Dales National Park, there’s a huge choice of things to do, both in the town itself and surrounding areas. Whether you enjoy nothing better than browsing around the shops and enjoying a cup of tea and a delicious homemade cake, or tackling some of the most challenging walking routes Yorkshire has to offer, Skipton has something for everyone.
