Shetland Bus Coach Trip comes to the Rendezvous

We’re looking forward to welcoming some very special visitors to the Rendezvous next June when the Shetland Bus Coach Trip rolls into town.

This gorgeous 1950 Bedford coach is making its long journey home to the Shetlands from Norfolk and on the way the team behind the project will be spending the night here at the Rendezvous. The vintage coach was an integral part of life on Shetland between 1950 and 1979 and was used to transport islanders to and from school, shops and other essential amenities.

The project is the brainchild of the coach’s owner, Nick Taylor, who decided to return the coach to Shetland after meeting its former owner and operator, John Watt from Reawick. The coach is of the iconic Duple Vista design and has a six-cylinder petrol engine with a top speed of around 40 miles per hour which explains why the journey from Norwich to Shetland will take 12 days! Not only does the route take in Skipton but the coach will also pass through beauty spots such as Sandringham, Holmfirth, Ambleside, Keswick, Loch Lomond, Fort William and Skye.

The coach will be arriving at the Rendezvous on 13 June 2017 and if you would like to find out more about this fascinating project please see the Shetland Coach Trip website for further information.

Yorkshire Hotel Campaign for Courtesy winners!

2016 Top Town for Courtesy Trophy presented to Skipton

Celebrities and executive councillors of the National Campaign for Courtesy travelled from across the UK to present the 2016 Top Town for Courtesy Award to Skipton in North Yorkshire on Sunday 27 November.

Acting Chairman John Stokes, standing in for Chairman Peter Foot, presented the Salop Leisure ‘Top Town for Courtesy Trophy’ to the Mayor of Skipton, Councillor Martin Emmerson at the Rendezvous Hotel, Skipton.

The event, attended by Skipton residents and business owners, included presentations from the campaign as well as appearances by celebrity patron, health and fitness expert, best known as Britain’s ‘Green Goddess’, Diana Moran.

John Stokes, Acting Chairman for the National Campaign for Courtesy, said: “It gives me great pleasure on behalf of the National Campaign for Courtesy to present the Salop Leisure trophy to the people of Skipton as we name it Top Town for Courtesy in Great Britain in recognition of its commitment to promoting courtesy throughout the local community. Congratulations and thank you to everyone in Skipton.”

Rendezvous Hotel owner Malcolm Weaving, who nominated Skipton for the award, said: “I’m absolutely delighted that Skipton has won Top Town 2016. Rendezvous Hotel guests often tell me what a pleasure it is to visit Skipton. They are amazed by the ‘real Yorkshire welcome’ they receive from locals.

“I am always impressed by the general level of courtesy in the town and it was really good to hear that the judges who visited experienced it too. All Skipton businesses can get a ‘Courtesy Top Town’ window sticker, which can be collected at the tourist information centre in the town hall, to show they are part of the town’s success.”

UK High Street of the year in 2009, voted Sunday Times Best Place to Live in Britain 2014 and now the top town for courtesy 2016… what next?! Skipton is a friendly compact market town on the doorstep of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. Offering a superb range of activities, clubs, societies and entertainment it is also a short train ride away from the nearby city of Leeds.

The Rendezvous Hotel is family-run 96-room hotel, home to owners Malcolm and Karen Weaving, set on the Leeds Liverpool Canal, one mile south of Skipton, the ‘Gateway to the Dales’. It also features the largest square ballroom (according to our dance customers) in a privately-owned hotel in northern England.

Robert Zarywacz, Vice Chairman of the National Campaign for Courtesy, said: “Each year we seek out a town from across the country that has demonstrated courtesy in action. This year Skipton impressed our judges on their visit, following in the footsteps of previous titleholders Ilfracombe, Shrewsbury and Epsom.

“While a good quality physical environment is important, most people want to live in a friendly community. Modern lifestyles can create a lot of stress and courtesy helps us all to treat each other with respect. The Top Town award recognises towns where the community has taken the extra step to encourage courtesy in all aspects of life.

“Residents in any area who believe their town deserves recognition for the courtesy of their community can look out the for the launch of our search for next year’s Top Town for Courtesy early in 2017 at”

Launched in 1986, the National Campaign for Courtesy is a registered charity that is committed to good manners; respect for self and others; courtesy for all; and rejection of anti-social behaviour.

New Year, New You?

Why not book a short break in the Yorkshire Dales?

So the festive season is over, it’s the start of another year and the chances are you’re getting ready to go back to work. At this time of year it’s all too easy to feel down in the dumps so if you’re trying to get yourself motivated, why not think about making a resolution to get out and about more and enjoy the great outdoors?

Here at the Rendezvous we consider ourselves incredibly lucky to be based on the doorstep of one of the most beautiful parts of the UK – the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Not only does the National Park look gorgeous, it also boasts some of the finest walking and cycling routes this country has to offer, making it the ideal base for an active holiday.

Walking in the Yorkshire Dales

Whether you’re new to exercise or are an old hand, the Yorkshire Dales has something for everyone, regardless of skill and experience. When it comes to walking there’s the famous Yorkshire Three Peaks and although walking all three in one go is undeniably challenging, why not start by tackling just one peak? Or if you prefer something a little easier, both the Pennine Way and the Dales Way pass through the National Park and walking small sections of either route is a great way to enjoy the beauty of the Dales.

Yorkshire Dales for cyclists

Cyclists really are spoilt in this part of the world – don’t forget that the Tour de France Grand Depart passed through here – as the Yorkshire Dales offers literally hundreds of miles of stunning cycling routes. Whether you like nothing better than getting mucky on your mountain bike, or prefer to stick to the roads, the National Park is the perfect place of a cycling break.

Talking of breaks and holidays, if you’d like to explore the Dales, we think there’s no better place to stay than the Rendezvous Hotel. Perfectly located on the edge of the National Park but within easy reach of Skipton town centre, we think our Yorkshire Dales hotel accommodation is pretty hard to beat.
