Step back in time in the Dales
The Yorkshire Dales is famous for its glorious scenery, making it incredibly popular with walkers, cyclists and anyone who loves the outdoors. But did you know that the Dales also have lots to offer for anyone with a keen interest in history?
The landscape of the Yorkshire Dales is dotted with castles and stately homes, offering a whole host of opportunities for history fans. Skipton Castle is almost on the doorstep of the Rendezvous and as it’s one of the most well-preserved medieval castles in England, is definitely well worth a visit. With lots of rooms to explore, Skipton Castle dominates the top of the High Street and offers stunning views across the town to the Dales beyond. There’s also a café which serves delicious home-cooked food – the perfect place to sit and relax after soaking up all that history!
The stunning Bolton Abbey Estate is just a short drive from the Rendezvous and if you don’t have a car, it can also be reached using public transport. Bolton Abbey is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area and it’s not hard to see why as the beautiful ruins of Bolton Priory sit amidst gorgeous countryside on the banks of the River Wharfe. The estate has lots to offer, including miles of lovely walking routes, the Cavendish Pavilion Café and a gift shop.
Saltaire is well worth a visit and this UNESCO World Heritage site is a purpose-built village which was created in the 1850s by Sir Titus Salt to accommodate his textile mill and its workers. The majority of the buildings are still in use and Salts Mill is home to a range of shops, alongside an art gallery which showcases works by David Hockney who was born in Bradford. Saltaire Tourist Information Centre is a very useful source of information about the village, including guided walks and talks on its fascinating history.
We couldn’t end this article without mentioning Haworth, home to the famous Bronte family. As mentioned in one of our recent blog posts, Haworth is just a short drive from Skipton and as 2016 sees the start of a four year programme of special events to commemorate the lives of the Bronte family, is must-see destination for lovers of history and literature alike. The village of Haworth is very picturesque with its cobbled main street and collection of independent shops and cafes, whilst the Bronte Parsonage Museum houses fascinating displays on the Bronte family.
