Cycle star unveiled gallery of successes at the Rendezvous Hotel

Cycling legend Brian Robinson, the first British winner of the Tour de France in 1958 and the first Briton to complete the famous race, was at the Rendezvous Hotel for the unveiling of a photo gallery based around his sporting achievements.

The gallery includes a host of photographs, documentation and newspaper cuttings from over the course of his great cycling career, and Mr Robinson, now 83, was there to discuss his experiences first hand.

Mr Robinson, two of whose grandchildren race, said: ‘It is fantastic really, they’ve done a great job. It is something I never expected – I’ve had two careers since then. It was what I wanted to do as a young man and I did it, then settled down to marriage, business and retirement – it has all been pretty good.’

The first Briton to finish the Tour de France in 1955 and the first three years later to win a stage, Mr Robinson shot back into public consciousness decades into retirement from the sport, becoming a figurehead for Welcome to Yorkshire’s staging of the Grand Depart last year.

He was back in the saddle six weeks after he was knocked off his bike by a car driver last year, fracturing his collar bone, ribs and puncturing a lung.

Peter Proctor, the 1961 British Road Racing Champion was also there to speak and offer his support to his friend since their National Service days together.

Also, Welcome to Yorkshire’s Chief Executive Gary Verity was also in attendance. This co-incides with the Rendezvous Hotel’s unveiling of 16 new rooms entitled the ‘Tour de France Block’ to celebrate the country’s staging of the Grand Depart when the famous cycle race passed through the town last year.

Skipton Charities Gala

Coming to town tomorrow – Saturday 13th June. The Skipton and District Cottage Hospital had been built at the time of Queen Victoria’s Jubilee but the funding was proving very difficult. The decision was made to hold a gala to raise money for the hospital, and a committee was formed from many local people. The first gala took place on Saturday 13th July 1901 on the Brick Buildings Fields off Bailey Road.

The gala commenced with a “Grand Procession”, including the “Public Bodies of the Town”, “Trade Societies”, cars, cyclists, comic bands and six other bands. Prizes for various classes in the procession were donated by “The Gentry and Tradesmen of the Town”. Circus acts entertained on the field together with a Punch & Judy and Keighley Parish Church Athletic Team. Extra trains ran from miles around to enable people to get to the grand event.

A huge crowd joined in the fun and the whole day was a great success; so much so that it was decided to have a Hospital Day every year. Many locals joined in the organising of the gala with several sub-committees to help with the work involved.

After the NHS was formed the hospital was funded from central government so the gala continued with the profits going to local charities.

Today a small group keep the tradition of the gala going and continue to support local organisations. Any helpers are always welcome both on the day and in the organisation of the event.

If you would like to help with the continuing success of the gala then please contact the organisers:

Rendezvous with Relaxation

When a hotel is called the Rendezvous, there’s a certain expectation that people are going to meet up there.

Rendezvous SkiptonAnd in the case of the Rendezvous at Skipton in North Yorkshire, that’s never in doubt – there’s always something going on and there’s a buzz about the place even on the quietest of days with people getting together.

It’s hard to ignore as you drive in or out of the Dales market town on the Keighley road, because it was built in warm sandstone to reflect the look of the many converted mills and warehouses in this part of the world and backs directly onto the Leeds and Liverpool Canal…
